As an
Instrumentation Manufacturing Engineer at Lindheimer Astronomical Research Center at Northwestern University in the 1960’s, Mr. Egon R. Jaeggin worked on the first Hand Held Camera used in outer space. It was a very challenging project that required each team member to verify his results against the highest standards. Then, as now Mission Success was the ultimate goal. Xtrememachining demands the best of its people, machines, and systems.
Pioneering on the frontier has always been a part of our business. Most space worthy applications are very challenging, with critical geometries and difficult “terrain” which must be skillfully handled by machinists, programmers and engineers. The
Hi-Rel Manufacturing Sector in the U.S. is an industry of critical importance to our national security.
The culture of highly analytical, detailed manufacturing of complex parts and assemblies deserves more recognition and support. We need new apprentice programs for recruitment and education. There have been many bills before the U.S. Congress in recent times. Most have a difficult time getting the proper level of political support and funding. Additionally, our industry needs to nurture its culture. Too many metalworking professionals see themselves as providing “machine time,” and little else.
We’re all concerned with profits, but we need to remember
our business is highly differentiated based on our commitment to manufacturing, and to specific engineering and programming expertise. It is this culture that may be threatened by the pressures of a Global Economy. However, it is also a culture which can continue to thrive if we follow our deepest convictions and give ourselves a voice.
